The Schur-Horn Theorem and Symplectic Geometry

Date Monday, February 10, 2014

The goal of this talk is to introduce symplectic geometry (a branch of differential geometry) by casting some results about Hermitian matrices with prescribed eigenvalues (originally due to Schur in the 1920's and Horn in the 1950's) as a corollary of a big theorem in symplectic geometry.
